Thanks to an SA paddling buddy Rob Sutherland, for sending in this photo of me, which I had never seen before, taken on our last Nootka Island to Tofino trip. Guys always keep special photos for special occasions. In this case I guess I got let off lightly. Thanks Rob

June 16 Update from Dave Pinel, of West Coast Expeditions, Spring Island

Hi All,
Here is an update from David Pinel from West Coast Expeditions:
"Dave Pinel here from West Coast Expeditions on Spring Island in Kyuquot. Jerome arrived at our camp area last night, tuckered, but getting into the rhythm of these long days. His first 2 days were essentially against wind and current, so earned every mile. Yesterday he had a very slight push, and safe waters around the Brooks Peninsula. He had a good recovery rest last night and paddled off mid-morning in good spirits. He wanted me to pass on that the Spot Device has had some slight salt water intrusion to the battery area and corrosion which he's cleaned out...but wasn't sure how deep the damage was - hopefully only the battery area ...which he can maintain. If the Spot Device acts up or dies, he has the VHF to at least get a call out in an emergency."

Thank you David

June 15, Brooks and the Spot

Jerome is back online!! just got a SPOT update to my phone - I jumped on the computer and the tracker is working too!! He is almost past Brooks Peninsula - for those who are not familiar with the Vancouver Island - Brooks can be a wild place - juts far out into the Pacific ocean - always gets swell. He should be in touch with civilization soon if he stays closer to shore - if not it will be a couple of days.

Start: June 12th, 4pm, east of Port Hardy; and the Spot

The SPOT that Jerome is using stopped transmitting after an hour on Wednesday June 12. I have not received any other updates from Jerome so am not sure why the SPOT is not transmitting any more. I called SPOT up and everyting is fine on their side. I did text Jerome - hopefully he figures it out soon.
Thanks
Sam
Jerome: An hour after I started, I paddled round the corner at Port Hardy, into an unexpected, fresh NW headwind. The day before, when I committed to the start, it was supposed to be an Easterly! Bummer, as this is the only time one has a choice of weather. Anyway, with a strong ebb tide in my favour (at least I got that right), it was a wet ride straight off the bat, with little white caps breaking over the deck. This must have wet the Spot, but since it continued to give a green light for transmission and tracks, I didn't know it wasn't working until the day I set off for Brooks, when it had a red light and I stopped in the kelp on an unusually calm sunny spell and dried it out. Water must have got into the casing as there was a little brown slime in there. It worked well after that, as I had it inside my dry map case. The problem later on, the day I had a tailwind gusting to 40 knots was because of the low (alkaline) batteries I put in, not water inside.

Starting around 4pm today

I'm leaving Stories Beach, just east of Port Hardy in about 2hrs time, around 4pm
Feeling good. Conditions calm, both wind and seas, nothing major happening, everything gently in my favour, at least through Friday, then a couple of more honest, variable days around Tofino, though still relatively calm.

Time to beat is 15 days 11 hrs 47 mins, so if I start at 4pm today, I'll have until 3.47am Fri 28th to get 'er done

Can't wait. I'm so full of food it'll be great to get out there and start working it off. Be nice to see the island too - haven't been to all of it yet, though there is a lot to be said for a 3 week base camp in the Brooks Peninsula. Another day ...

Keep well people whatever you're doing, I'll be thinking of you

Departure date/time

Well, finally a departure date and time. I'll be leaving tomorrow

Wed 12th June 2013, around 4pm from Stories Beach Rd, on the east side of Port Hardy

Tracy Menzies will be there to witness my departure

I've been staying at Dazy/Crystal's place on Stories Beach Rd, friends of Rob Hansen's. They're not here, but Crystal's sister Tracy is. Thanks for the meals Tracy and thanks to Dazy/Crystal. Wonderful folks - looking forward to meeting them when I return
